Corte Volponi vineyards are located in Negrar, a small village in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico Region, in the western part of Veneto, between the city of Verona and Garda Lake. All the vineyards are Pergola Veronese trained, the hystorical system of cultivation in Valpolicella: two rows of vine linked on the top and forming a “roof of leaves” to guarantee to our grapes the best sun exposure but also the best protection from excessive direct bems.
Profile:
2019
What’s In It: 55% Corvina, 25% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella.
How It Was Made:
THE VINEYARD: The grapes grow on well-exposed and ventilated clay-limestone soils. Some of them (Corvina and Corvinone) are traditionally grown in Pergola veronese, with a density of 3000 vines per hectare. Some (Rondinella) are grown in Guyot with a density of 4000 vines per hectare.
THE HARVEST: The grapes are hand-picked in small crates between the last week of September and the beginning of October.
THE VINIFICATION: The first fermentation, in stainless steel, is aimed at fully preserving the characteristics of the grapes, with their aromas, style and elegance. Maceration lasts from 12 to 15 days and temperatures are carefully managed from 23° to 25°C. At the end of February, after the racking of the best Amarones and Reciotos, this young wine is integrated with their marc with which a new fermentation begins. This typical and ancient practice of “Ripasso” allows the extraction of colour, sugars and aromas. Fermentation requires 15-20 days and gives the wine great structure and elegant complexity. REFINEMENT The wine ages for 12 months: partly in small French oak barrels and partly in large Slavonian oak barrels. It completes its refinement for another 4 months in the bottle before being released for sale.
THE WINE This Ripasso with an intense ruby red color, presents itself with a rich bouquet with spicy notes reminiscent of black pepper and wild red berries. On the palate it is balanced, very pleasant with hints of red fruits and a sensation of soft tannins.
